Mac Miller and Waka Flocka Flame might not seem like the most obvious of partnerships but on “Dog Pound” they work surprisingly well together.
There’s a simple explanation for this and it rests in the catalytic presence of DJ Dahi, a producer who’s made some of this year’s best beats, from Kendrick Lamar‘s “Money Trees“, to Smoke DZA’s “K.O.N.Y”, to Dom Kennedy‘s “My Type of Party“.
Here he provides a slow, drum-heavy instrumental, complete with a
haunting vocal sample. The cascading beat provides an opportunity for
both rappers to experiment with their respective sounds, and they
benefit from switching it up. On one side, Mac Miller’s unappealing
frat-pack instincts are washed away; on the other, raspy Waka steps away
from Brick Squad’s ratchet reactions.
The track, which you can listen to below, unfortunately won’t appear on Mac Miller’s Watching Movies with The Sound Off, and whilst I think that’s a grand old shame, it is available for free download, so I probably shouldn’t whinge about it.
