Harry Belafonte Wants To End The Beef With Jay-Z - Video

harry-belafonte
Renowned social activist Harry Belafonte is hoping to resolve his issues with JAY Z and BeyoncĂ© by inviting the superstar couple for a one-on-one sit down, in which they can perhaps address their differences and reach some common ground.
The icon recently rubbed Mr Carter up the wrong way with a remark reportedly claiming that the rapper and his wife have turned their back on social responsibility and could be utilising their celebrity status more effectively. Jay then responded via his new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, and also went into more depth about why Harry’s comment had offended him during a #FactsOnly interview with Elliott Wilson last week.
“Belafonte went about the wrong way. The way he did it within the media and then he bigged-up Bruce Springsteen. It was like woo, you just sent the wrong message like all around…” Jay told Elliott.
Now, Belafonte – who is currently protesting the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case – has attempted to clear the air by explaining what he really meant by his controversial remark.
When asked on MSNBC about whether Jay should continue touring with Justin Timberlake, Harry responded:
“I would be hard pressed to tell Mr. JAY Z what to do with this time and his fortune. All I can be critical is of what he is not doing. This conflict that is emerging was not from me as a direct attack on Jay-Z or Beyonce. I was at a press conference in Switzerland. Questions were raised by the international press. They asked about the artists and the social engagement of the past based on a film we were watching…and how artists responded earlier in my life and how they responded today.
“And I made the observation that the highly powerful voice that our community has – Black America has – there is so much celebrity power that it was sad to see that the collective of the celebrity power had not been applied to bring consciousness to the inequities that we face,” Belafonte said. “Artist that heard that responded in a very strong way. You’ll find that Jamie Foxx, you’ll find Chuck D [of Public Enemy]…you find that any number of highly profiled people have taken that critique and called for [a meeting]. We’ve sat. We’ve talked. And I will tell you now that these people that I’ve just mentioned are officially behind Dream Defenders. They are prepared to come down. They are prepared to perform. I would hope that Jay-Z would not take personally what was said because it was not said about him personally.”
He then extended an invitation to Jay and Bey, with hopes that the trio can sit down privately and talk things through.
“Having said that, I would like to say to Jay-Z, to Beyonce: My heart is wide open and filled with nothing but hope and the promise that we can sit and have a one-on-one. And lets understand each other rather than try to answer these questions and these nuances in a public place.”

J.Cole Talks To Soul Culture's "#OKNotToBeOK" From Depression To Happiness - Video

In the latest segment of SoulCulture’s mental health campaign, #OKNotToBeOK, Roc Nation’s North Carolina Emcee J. Cole discusses experiencing depression whilst crafting his anticipated sophomore album, Born Sinner.
“When you listen to the album you’ll notice how it flows from darkness to light, from hell to heaven, depression to happiness,” Cole says of the upcoming LP’s emotive theme. “It literally was a way out… I’m writing my way out of a negative place, a darker place.”
“When I say darker place, there’s no suicidal thoughts,” he adds. “You’re talking to a person who’s mind was strong. I had nothing but positive thoughts – and you’ve got to have the balls to move from Fayetteville to New York, not knowing nobody, just because you feel like you’re gonna make it in the music business. And then for that to actually happen… And then you get signed…
“There’s a mentality that I had that was never shaken, it was quiet, it wasn’t outspoken, it was all in [my head]. The minute that changes and now I’m dealing with a mindstate I’ve never had to deal with before – which is fighting all these negative thoughts – that’s the dark place I’m talking about.
“My self-confidence kind of shattered, you know what I mean? Trying to fight against that, writing my way out of it. This whole album is writing my way out of that place. Because I had never had to deal with that before. I was a happy kid, I wasn’t a down kid. I observed life and I saw it for its positives and negatives, but I wasn’t a depressed child. So when I had to deal with that type of mindstate I wasn’t speaking on it…
“You know, I was fucked up for this whole album,” he reveals. “I was doubting myself this whole time… It was real to me. Pressure is real.”

"Future" was shot by Nick Beauregard, I love when great artist pull together and produce awesome work.  I'm so disappointed this barely has 400 views.  Listen people we can't complain about the "Garbage" they play on the radio when we don't support The REal Artist.  Turn off the radio and go to the internet where the Real artist are.  This is another Chicago artist who should have been signed twice.

Poet Dean Atta pays tribute to Trayvon Martin with “Black Britain & Black America”

trayvon martin
Whilst many are still reeling over the verdict in the George ZimmermanTrayvon Martin trial, a number of media figures have quickly come out to express their views of the decision to acquit the Neighborhood Watchman over the death of 17 year old teen. UK poet Dean Atta delivers a timely and poignant poem entitled “Black Britain & Black America #TrayvonMartin,” paying tribute to the slain adolescent in addition to expressing the varied similarities and discriminatory issues plaguing both the UK and US.
The case has been steeped in controversy due to the racial tension building around it, with many taking to the streets in America to protest against the decision. Atta’s piece focuses on the sorrow and grief which both nations face due to discrimination and struggles within minorities, giving a level-headed performance rather than a fiery chastisement of last Saturday’s verdict.
Check out “Black Britain & Black America” now by pressing play below and feel free to leave your comments on the Trayvon Martin case within the C section.

Black Britain and Black America

These so-called chips on our shoulder
Are the building-blocks of equality
I do not need permission to recall my history
Black Britain and America are not the same
But we see you
And we feel your pain
I Am Trayvon Martin
For our races and birthplaces
We are not to blame
I stare into this shattered mirror
A society that reflects our own
Black America, you are not alone
Our paths are not parallel
But our struggles need not be separate
If we teach our children to never forget
That before any wars on terror
There were wars on our humanity
Labelling us less than we were born to be
Equal
Though most days it feels we are guilty
Until proven innocent
Failures until we achieve something excellent
But it’s also our right not to excel
To live normal decent lives
And not fear bullets and jail
Not have to justify our existence or presence
In countries built on our backs with no thanks or penance
It’s not just the taxis and black cabs not stopping for us
It’s the police and civilians targeting us
It’s losing out to the white candidate
Despite the same qualifications
Or getting the job
And people calling it positive discrimination
Yes, I’ve got a big black chip on my shoulder
And this pink one too
LGBT and feminist, I will stand by you
America, I have only stood on your soil once
And I don’t understand all of your laws
But yours is a struggle I cannot ignore
There are many more struggles that need to unite too
Native Americans and Australians, I see you
In this black mirror made of more than glass
But they say, “It’s not about race now
It’s only about class.”

Actor, Athlete, & Martial Artist Jim Kelly Dies At Age 67 Of Cancer

Obit Kelly
The actor, athlete and martial artist Jim Kelly has died at the age of 67.  Widely regarded as the first Black martial arts film star, Kelly was best known for his role opposite Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon, playing Williams, a nonchalant yet egotistical combatant that competes alongside Lee.
Chosen for the part after making a name for himself with a number of karate tournament wins, Kelly’s role as Williams came at the height of Blaxploitation prominence in the early 1970s. His handsome looks coupled with his large afro and sideburns catapulted him into the spotlight, turning him into a cult figure quickly. Despite his acting career never really taking off, Kelly was able to enjoy a fair amount of success in the years that followed.
Speaking with Salon back in 2010, Kelly said working on the Enter the Dragon was one of the best experiences of his life; “”Bruce was just incredible, absolutely fantastic. I learned so much from working with him. I probably enjoyed working with Bruce more than anyone else I’d ever worked with in movies because we were both martial artists. And he was a great, great martial artist.”
Kelly, who had been suffering from cancer according to his ex-wife Marilyn Dishman, passed away on Saturday at his home in San Diego.

AWKWORD - #AaronSwartz Suicide 'PSA' Song" (ft. L*A*W) Set To Drop July 1st - (Audio)

As we have seen with the passing of Capital Steez and Freddy E this past year alone, we have a mental health and suicide issue in HipHop.  This represents of a larger trend in America, with a suicide occurring every 15 minutes. Then consider all the young (and older) people still alive and suffering.
Aaron Swartz, the founder of Reddit, was systematically targeted, arrested, prosecuted and harassed by the federal government, essentially for being down with the likes of Wikileaks and seeking freedom of information. He was 26 when he was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment, having hanged himself. The young man who invented RSS at 14…

Sivu - "Bodies" - Audio Download

The clip sees the 24-year-old reunite with director and ex-flat-mate Adam Powell, after the pair’s last collaboration – ‘Better Man Than He’, filmed live within an MRI scanner – picked up over half a million hits, and showed viewers precisely what goes inside a musician’s head.

A darker and more potent follow-up, ‘Bodies’ is accompanied by a short film shot across various locations in Powell’s new home of Los Angeles. The mysterious clip – “is this Hell? Who is driving the car, and where to?” – is set against field recordings the pair made whilst interviewing strangers across the city. The result is a stark accompaniment to the lyrical, Noah’s Ark imagery of ‘Bodies’.

The ‘BodiesEP follows Sivu’s sell-out show at London’s Waiting Room, radio support across the likes of Radio 1, 6Music and XFM, as well as live dates at Bushstock Festival and in support of Laura Mvula. Sivu plays a host of festivals this summer, whilst continuing work on his debut album.
